ABOUT THE FOUNDER
LANE TABB is an American luxury womenswear designer and the founder of NOVAE RES.
Born and raised in New York, Lane comes from a long line of artisans, including her grandmother who worked as a seamstress in a now-defunct luxury coat manufacturer after she came to the United States from Italy.
“I remember hearing stories about how my grandmother would take home from the factory bundles of coats every night to sew on buttons after dinner to make extra money for things her children needed. I think that is where I inherited my work ethic and my love of hand craftsmanship. “
Lane studied fine art and photography at Parsons School of Design, graduating with a BFA, and then earned her Master's Degree in Fine Art and Cultural Studies. Her first job was not in fashion but working as a Jr. gallerist for some of New York's most celebrated galleries, including Metro Pictures and Gavin Brown’s Enterprise. Lane had the chance to be part of the discovery of new artists and the collaboration between art and fashion.
It was happenstance that Lane got a side job working at a private creative atelier that worked on Runway collections for Donna Karan and other brands. This is where she got her introduction to the fashion industry and where she built her passion for artisan craftsmanship.
“ I was working at one of the last hand-made embellishment studios in New York. We were working on special developments of lace knit yardage and beading embellishments for the Donna Karan runway collection shows, and I found it so creative and inspiring. I knew that was what I wanted to do. I think I have spent my entire career in fashion trying to find a place like that again. They do not exist in New York really anymore, so I decided to create a brand that brought that kind of work back. In-house creativity and control over the quality, not tech packs sent off to China. That is not what luxury is supposed to be."
Lane continued to build her career working for many distinct brands in creative direction, design, and product development, including DKNY, Herve Leger, Max Azria, Kate Spade, Jill Stuart and Rebecca Minkoff .
In 2013 Tabb took a short break from the fashion industry. She began working with fashion tech start-ups in Silicon Valley, eager to learn more about innovation, data, and the development of fit technology.
This work sparked Tabbs ' interest in combining craft and technology.
NOVAE RES sits at the intersection between new tech and old-world artisan craftsmanship. This system has taken her many years to develop, including building a manufacturing system, establishing software partnerships, and outfitting two on-demand manufacturing test facilities before building the final version of NOVAE RES on-demand artisan Studio.
Lane is committed to creating luxury womenswear for all, built on the principles of timelessness and uncompromising quality. Anchored in her core design principles of artisanal craftsmanship, Sustainable heritage milled fabrics, fit for all focused collections.
